Our Curriculum and Environments

Thoughtful design. Intentional teaching practices.

Westcliff’s learning environment encourages children’s natural curiosity and their connection to nature, while also providing a well-organized and engaging curriculum that fosters independence, socialization, and self-expression. Our curriculum and environments are based on the principles of the Montessori approach, the Reggio Emilia philosophy, and nature-based education, which is reflected in thoughtful design, intentional teaching practices, as well as the unparalleled joy and engagement of the children in our environments.

Montessori

The Montessori curriculum is based on the belief that children have an innate desire to learn and explore, and that they learn best when they are given the freedom to follow their own interests and passions. In our classrooms, we utilize a blend of classic Montessori materials alongside modified resources that integrate elements of nature. These natural materials, including plants, rocks, shells, and more, offer additional sensory stimulation and encourage exploration and discovery. We also incorporate a range of Nature-based learning materials, including books on animals and plants, nature-themed puzzles, and art supplies derived from natural sources.

Reggio Emilia

The Reggio Emilia approach provides inspiration for project-based learning that is child-led. To determine the subject and direction of the project, teachers carefully observe and listen to the students’ inquiries, hypotheses, and theories and use them as a starting point for inquiry-based projects. The project approach has students gathering information using the ‘four C’s’ Communication, Collaboration, Critical thinking and Creativity. Teachers facilitate many group activities that encourage socialization and promote thought-provoking questions.

Nature

The Nature-based curriculum promotes whole-child development and environmental literacy. Elements of nature are built into the classroom environment. The outdoor play area is nature based and designed to complement indoor learning activities while promoting a connection to the natural world through unstructured play using natural elements, nature walks, and gardening projects.
